3D Secure credit card payments

3D Secure credit card payments

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is an online credit card payment authentication standard developed by major card companies in order to make online credit card transactions more secure and to decrease the risk of fraudulent use of credit card payments online.

With 3D Secure, an online credit card payment is redirected to the website of the issuing bank for authorisation. The issuing bank sends a one-time pin to the buyer’s cell phone. The buyer needs to enter that pin online, in an authentication page, for the payment to be accepted by the issuing bank. The one-time-pin is known only to the buyer and the bank that issued the credit card. The merchant has no access to it.

The Visa 3D Secure system is called Verified-by-Visa, and the MasterCard one is known as SecureCode.

Why is 3D Secure obligatory?

3D Secure is a regulation issued by PASA (Payments Association South Africa) and it applies to all online credit card transactions.  Ultimately, this is a good thing because 3D Secure will reduce the fraud risk on credit card transactions and provide a safer place to trade for buyers and sellers.

To enrol for 3D Secure please contact your bank to find out how you can enrol for 3D Secure on your credit card. Certain credit card issuers, such as American Express and Diners Club, do not subscribe to 3D Secure.

3D Secure frequently asked questions:

I have enrolled for 3D Secure at my bank’s website. What happens when I want to make a credit card payment for the purchases I made on Bob Shop?
When you select to pay by credit card at checkout, you will be prompted to enter your credit card details. The bank that issued your credit card will then require that you verify you are the card holder (for example by entering your pin code or one-time password).

I have enrolled for 3D Secure but all my attempts to pay with a credit card on  have been unsuccessful. What should I do?
You need to contact the bank that issued your credit card to confirm that your card is indeed enrolled for 3D Secure. Then you can attempt the payment again. If you are still struggling, please use a different payment method on Bob Shop, for example bobPay EFT.

What if I still do not want to enrol for 3D Secure with my bank?
You will still be able to shop on Bob Shop. The great majority of our sellers give you the option to finalise your purchase with an alternate method of payment.
